New Orleans Po-Boy Preservation Festival

Sunday, November 23 marks the second annual NOLA Po-Boy festival. The festival will be on Oak street once again this year and expanded to cover 5 blocks, alleviating the previous year's complaint of overcrowding. Food vendors have increased from 14 to 30. Along with musical acts such as Amanda Shaw and Papa Grows Funk will be over 60 artist's booths.-TB

NEW ORLEANS PO-BOY PRESERVATION FESTIVAL

What: A free street festival celebrating the po-boy, with 30 food vendors, 60 artists, expert panels and two music stages.

Vice Finally Proves It's Not Too Cool For Itself

I have a love / hate relationship with Vice magazine (the glossy New York magazine that's free...if you live in NY). Vice makes no apologies for it's hipster ways or it's blatant snobbery. I do delight in the Dos and Don'ts section as well as the video game reviews (nerd to the end). Typically the interviews that they conduct have great topics, but the interviewer seems to spend more time trying to get in smart ass comments and witty remarks for the interview to be worth reading. Well they have bucked that trend with their latest interview. Jeff Johnson interviews LA homicide detective Dennis Kilcoyne about two murders of homeless men by two old ladies. I have to admit that the interview itself isn't mind blowing, but the story is incredible. That's why I enjoyed it so much: the interviewer shut the hell up and let the story tell itself. So really the INTERVIEW sucked, but the story is awesome. -TB

Katie Couric's second interview with Sarah Palin aired last night on CBS. I watched the interview with utter disbelief. I've made it pretty clear my stance on Palin. I'm still soaking it all in, but I've posted both the interview and a few reactions. Below is also an excerpt from the interview where Palin "answers" Couric's question about her reading material:

Couric: And when it comes to establishing your world view, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this to stay informed and to understand the world?

Palin: I’ve read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media.

Couric: What, specifically?

Palin: Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years.

Couric: Can you name a few?

Palin: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news, too. Alaska isn’t a foreign country, where it’s kind of suggested, “wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?” Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America.

Is it wrong to be enjoying this so much? Apparently John McCain's knight in red lipstick isn't measuring up to what they expected. Sarah Palin's interview with Katie Couric is not only painful to watch, but even to read. The idea that Palin considers her state's proximity to Russia part of her foreign policy resume is an afront to the intelligence of the American people. After hearing that single comment, you have to ask, "Seriously?" So lacking is her understanding of foreign matters that she was sent on a field trip to meet world leaders. Of course these meetings were closed to the press. Now her own party is slowing realizing that this is turning ugly. Can't wait for the V.P. debate!

I've been receiving emails from various friends and colleagues about the presidential and VP candidates. Usually the story's "source" is a retired military officer or active soldier in an attempt to give credit and patriotic fever to the message. The latest one I received was concerning Barack Obama's stance on the national anthem. After the alleged comments comes the disbelief and rage from our retired military officer.
A simple Google search on "Obama National Anthem" quickly reveals that not only are the comments reported in the email to be from Obama false, but his exact email has been circulating for some time. My point is not for you to vote for Barack Obama, but that in your decision to pick a candidate rely on your own research. Do not rely on others agendas and prejudice to decide this momentous decision for you. That would be truly unpatriotic. -TB

Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice. Terms of the deal include resigning as mayor, 4 months in jail, and paying a $1 million fine. In a city which was voted one of America's "fastest-dying" cities by Forbes magazine, Kilpatrick not only embarrassed Detroit but wasted its resources and money on this rediculous fiasco.
It absolutely astonishes me that this lasted as long as it did. That this man still had supporters sickens me even more. Even in his plea Kilpatrick was an arrogant asshole to the end, replying to the presiding judge's question of understanding Kilpatrick's right to be innocent until proven guilty (with a smirk on his face): "I gave that up a long time ago." A victim to the end.

On another note: Detroit could be New Orleans twin sister. Instead of the automobile industry we have tourism. While our city fights for it's very existence our own politicians, both locally and statewide, act as though they have been appointed by divine rite. Brushing aside legitimate questions asked my constituents and Lee Zurik. Reading parts of the AP article on Kilpatrick is like our own headlines. "Kilpatrick's first term was tumultuous.
